Greetings guys!

Thank you for tuning in to my Music Dealers Featured Artist of the Month: Gas Station Robber .

They have 2 shows coming up one in Pomona, which will be the debut of the new Gas Station Robber 5 piece band.

So if you're in Pomona tomorrow, be sure to hit Character's Sports Bar which is located at 276 E. 1st St. , Pomona Ca.

They go on at 10, so be sure to get extra hammered really early so you can scream your lungs out without regard.

A week after that (11.21), they have a show at Mr. T's Bowl, which is located at 5621 1/2 Figueroa, Los Angeles, Ca, there they go on at 11.

Music Dealers Featured Artist of the Month: Day 4 (Interview)

Gas Station Robber is a ground breaking indie group from Los Angeles, California. Consisting of Chris Holbrook and Craig Conard, their music has been compared to The Postal Service, Snow Patrol, and Death Cab For Cutie. Using both organic and inorganic sounds and utilizing visuals in their performances, its no wonder why I chose them as this month's Music Dealers Featured Artist.

WJ: What instrument would you say is most pleasing to the ear?

GSR: I would say the cello. It’s very soothing and has such a wide range of expression. I love the deep resonance of the instrument. It would be a great addition to our live show actually.

WJ: Why do you think Lethal Weapon 4 was shunned by original Lethal Weapon fans?

GSR: Well, I'm glad you asked that. This is something that I've wanted to get off of my chest for a long time. With Lethal Weapon 4 they just took it way over the top. I mean come on, adding Chris Rock to the cast as a cop? The only comic relief it really needed was Joe Pesci. The film is all about pyrotechnics and lacks a good story line. The best thing about this film is that it's Jet Li's american film debut.

WJ: What speakers/headphones/monitors do you like hearing music through most?

GSR: The Bose noise canceling headphones are really good. They have great clarity. The headphones allow you to hear all the little details in the music that you might have missed otherwise.

WJ: Have you worked with licensing companies before, if so, what makes Music Dealers sooooo much better?

GSR: Yes we have. I really like the Deal Board aspect of what you guys do. Artists can actually stay involved on a daily basis by seeing what opportunities are out there for their music. It gives you the sense that you have a little bit of control because you’re able to submit the songs that you feel may be right for the job. With most companies you’re completely detached and basically wash your hands of the entire thing once you’ve put your music in their catalogue.

WJ: One audio program, one piece of hardware and one brand of chips for the rest of your life..?

GSR: For me it would be ProTools, an MBox and Cool Ranch Doritos. You can't get tired of Cool Ranch Doritos.

WJ: How many words would you say you can make by rearranging the letters in your name?

GSR: I don't understand the question. I'm going to have to pass this off to one of the other band members. We'll get back to you.

WJ: Are there any strange or weird practices you might have while working on your tracks?

GSR: Absolutely, I work in the bathroom. Anytime I get a little spark for a song idea it’s off to the bathroom for me. I used to have a tape recorder set up in there back in the day because it was the only quiet place I could get to. With such nice reverb in there it has remained a staple part of my creative process.

WJ: If you could have your work used in any place, any television show, any movie, any screenplay- past or present, what would it be?

GSR: We're not too picky, we would just like our music used. It has real cinematic quality to it so I think it could work really well in film.

WJ: What was the most ridiculous place you ever performed, good and bad?

GSR: Craig and I almost performed at a children's carnival with our last band. When I say children's carnival we're talking about kids that were 5 years old and under. Our opening act was a tap group of 3 and 4 year olds. We didn't think that was the right demographic for us.

WJ: Was Star Wars better as a trilogy, or hexalogy, why?

GSR: Trilogy! All I have to say is Jar Jar Binks.

WJ: Where do you see yourself in 13 years?

GSR: I see myself focusing on GSR material in one form or another, whether it's scoring music for film / tv or writing material for our 10th release. I'd love to be collaborating with people on multiple music projects at that point.

Rash Report: ESPN's 'Monday Night Football' Beats Broadcasters

MINNEAPOLIS (AdAge.com) -- Americans, a new Nielsen report indicated today, are watching more TV than ever, with the average viewer spending four hours and 49 minutes a day in front of the set. And it showed in prime-time last night, as ratings rose for prominent programs on Fox, CBS and the CW, and stayed even for ABC.

ESPN's 'Monday Night Football' sacked all other broadcast and cable competition with TV's highest-rated show.
Fox finished first in the ratings race for ad-centric adults 18-49, with an overall 4.1/10 rating and share. After a few weeks with baseball playoffs, "House" (5.3/13) was up 18% from its most-recent telecast and was the highest-rated show on network TV. "House's" lead-out, "Lie to Me" (3.0/7), had its second highest ratings this season and was up 25% from its last showing.

CBS was close behind in second place with a 4.0/10, with two of its sitcoms, "How I Met Your Mother" (3.5/9) and "Two and a Half Men" (4.6/11) matching their seaso-to-date original episode averages, while "Accidentally on Purpose" (2.9/7) and "Big Bang Theory" (4.7/11) were each two-tenths of a point off regular ratings levels.

At 10 p.m., drama "CSI: Miami" locked up its 4.0/11 original episode average and elevated 11% from last week, which is a good sign for upcoming episodes of "CSI: NY" and "CSI," as the trilogy has intertwined plots as a sweeps scheduling stunt.

ABC's third place 3.1/8 had "Dancing with the Stars" (3.4/8) off two-tenths of a point while "Castle" hit its 2.4/6 average. And despite finishing fifth, the CW's "One Tree Hill" and "Gossip Girl" (both 1.3/3) were up 18% and 8%, respectively.

And after a good weekend for football, it was a great night for it as well, as ESPN's "Monday Night Football" sacked all other broadcast and cable competition with TV's highest-rated show. The 6.5/17 watching the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Denver Broncos was 27% higher than last week's game.

Of course, the record-high viewership is a multi-day-part number, and despite the strong ratings for many shows Monday night, overall prime-time viewing is relatively flat, although Nielsen indicates it is still at its highest levels since 1991.

The networks, no doubt, hope that there's growth in the evening as well. NBC in particular could use it, as it finished fourth with a 1.8/5, as "Heroes" (2.3/6) hit an all-time low, and "Trauma" (1.8/4) and "The Jay Leno Show" (1.2/3) tied their lowest levels yet with adults 18-49.

WHAT TO WATCH:
Tuesday: Given the buzz over Taylor Swift on last weekend's "Saturday Night Live," it's surprising that "In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: Bright Lights, Big Stars, All Access Nashville" doesn't have her as one of the country stars interviewed. But it does have plenty of other country crooners, all in advance of Wednesday night's 43rd Annual CMA Awards.

Wednesday: And if you like "All Access Nashville," why not stay for the CMA Awards? Country not your cup of tea? (Or can of beer?) Then get your music fix on Fox's "Glee."

WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
Ratings retention for week two of "V," ABC's sci-fi series that premiered last Tuesday with the season's best demo delivery for a new show.

Industry News: SESAC Hit With Class Action Lawsuit

SESAC Hit With Class Action Suit By Local TV Broadcasters

The suit claims that SESAC, “signs up composers of music in popular television programs, guarantees them significantly higher incomes than they had received elsewhere, and then raises its prices without regard for the amount of music a station uses, employing threats of copyright infringement lawsuits as a bargaining tactic.”

The suit alleges that SESAC members, “are remunerated based not on the value of any individual composition, nor on the prices that their individual compositions would command in a competitive marketplace, nor even on the prices that their compositions would command under the restrictions imposed on ASCAP and BMI. Instead, their compensation is all that can be obtained by SESAC’s unlawfid licensing system, unfettered by the ‘restrictions’ of competition.”

The broadcasters’ complaint asks the court to order SESAC to stop alleged “price fixing and other anticompetitive acts,” and seeks treble damages under the antitrust laws.

“SESAC’s actions are an unlawful restraint of trade. The antitrust laws prevent the other two PROs from using their collective power to extract coercive rates for music from broadcasters. We believe those same antitrust principles should be applied to SESAC,” said Charles Sennet, chairman of the Television Music Licensing Committee.

SESAC, a for-profit entity based in Nashville and New York, is one of three U.S. performing rights organizations (PROs) that represent composers, songwriters and music publishers in the U.S. It licenses collectively the right to “publicly perform” SESAC members’ music over television, radio and the internet, and in stores, restaurants, stadiums and other public venues and media, in exchange for annual fees. These fees are used to pay royalties to composers, songwriters and music publishers who own the copyrights in the compositions.    The complaint alleges that essentially all television stations are compelled to pay SESAC the price it demands for a license because they cannot control what music is used in most of the programs and commercials they broadcast, and they cannot remove the music. Thus, to avoid broadcasting music without a license — a violation of copyright law —they have no choice but to accept SESAC’s licensing terms.

ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) and BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.), the other PROs, have been regulated for decades by consent decrees issued following antitrust suits brought by the U.S. Department of Justice. The broadcasters’ complaint accuses SESAC of engaging in “the very same practices that ASCAP and BMI were barred from continuing and the Consent Orders were designed to prevent.”    The ASCAP and BMI consent decrees provide for fees to be set by a court if a music user and the PRO are unable to come to terms, without the threat of a copyright infringement suit. No such mechanism exists for users of SESAC music, the complaint states.

Music Dealers Artist Events: Leslie Hunt Playing Benefit "Rock For Kids"

Leslie Hunt and her band will be playing a benefit for Rock For Kids (.org) at Reggie's Music Joint tonight at 8pm - band goes on at 10pm. Reggie's is located at 2105 S. State, Chicago Illinois. The show is 21+ and costs $12. Go out for a great cause and some great music.

A Little About Leslie
If you consider yourself a fan of LESLIE HUNT, you are not alone. From the legions worldwide who protested her too-soon dismissal from Season 6 of American Idol 2007 to the Chicago fan base who discovered her prior to American Idol, LESIE HUNT is a musical phenomenon. Her impressive performance history (onstage with familiar names like Kenny Rogers, Rick Springfield and Ides of March/Survivor’s Jim Peterik) is equal to her keyboard talent and her prolific self-composed song catalog. Her style emanates pop, rock and soul, with influences including Bjork, Joni Mitchell, Feist, Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley, Ben Folds Five and Stevie Wonder, all of whom are wonderfully present in her music, without taking away from the sheer originality of her sound, not to mention the power and control of her distinctive voice.

LESLIE HUNT has been performing as a musician since childhood. Singing and playing piano by age four, the St. Charles, Illinois native performed with Kenny Rogers at age 11 and had already played leading roles in productions of “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Music Man” by age 13. In 2001, she inked a development deal with Sony and recorded a five-song demo the following year. Emboldened by a brush with death in Brazil, LESLIE HUNT decided to audition for Season 6 of American Idol. She was chosen out of 104,000 competitors and quickly found herself in the national spotlight when she reached the “final 10 females” on American Idol 2007. From there, she found herself performing her original music on the Fox Morning Show in Chicago as well as many prestigious clubs, including The Empty Bottle, Martyr’s, Uncommon Ground, Elbo Room, Gunther Murphy's, Underground Wonderbar, and Katerina's.

LESLIE HUNT is currently releasing a full length album in early '09 through L & L Entertainment, Ltd. Expect more of the sultry melodies, lush harmonies, thoughtful piano playing, and pop sensibility of her previous outings. Having already accomplished more than most do in a lifetime, LESLIE HUNT has only just begun. Expect to hear more from this extraordinarily gifted singer, songwriter, and performer as her life unfolds.

What up everyone? The C.A.R.E. Reps here at Music Dealers are going to change things up a bit in the next few months. As you know, in the past we would each choose one artist a week as our “Featured Artist of The Week”-- which was 4 artists a week total. This was great and thank you to all the artist we featured, however we wanted to have our artist featured for more than a day to allow time for readers to really get to know our artist. So we decided to take a new approach to how we do our "Featured Artist" post. Beginning next week we are each going to choose one artist a month to feature. The artist we each chose would then be featured for that entire week, which means there will only be 4 artist featured a month. This will make it much more personal and will give readers a lot more info about our great artists.

William will kick off our new format for featured artists next week. Below is a breakdown of what we will be doing for our featured artists:

Monday: Artist intro video with an intro written by the C.A.R.E. Rep

Tuesday: Artist music videos, live performances, etc.

Wednesday: Wildcard Wednesday - Up to artist and C.A.R.E. Rep to be creative and throw something together

Thursday: Interview with the artist or artist / Music Dealers interaction

Friday: C.A.R.E. Rep wrap up video and any last write-ups

This new format will involve the artist a lot more and will give them some freedom to say and post what they want. So be sure to visit the Music Dealers blog in the coming weeks and begin to get to know some of the great artist in our community.

Hey everybody, today I wanted to spotlight Alex Plowright, a gifted composer from the United Kingdom. Alex is a classically trained pianist who has read music at Oxford University. The piece’s Alex creates can instantly paint a vivid picture placing the listener in the middle of an action scene, or his music can act as a perfect backdrop easily setting the appropriate mood without taking away from the main focus. Alex’s music would most definitely work well in any television and/or advertisements.

If you have ever noticed the intro at the beginning of most if not all Music Dealers videos then you have definitely gotten to sample the great work that Alex creates. The music that plays during the Music Dealers intro was composed by none other than Alex himself, another great example of his ability.

Hey everyone - finally, slowly getting over the flu and back at the Chicago Music Dealers HQ. Monday not only means extra coffee, slow days, and the worst day of the week -- it also means my Music Dealers featured artist of the week. This week I figured I would switch it up and choose a composer / sound designer -- Duane Decker. Duane has many different sounds and is very good at what he does. The band consists of 4 members, Judah, Ben, Wolf and Scoles. They hail from Philadelphia with most of their fan base being in or around the Pennsylvania area. I met this band at the Dewey Beach Music Conference a while back and saw them perform live. The energy on stage was infectious and the turn out was vast. You can say that they have one style but there is different feel to each of their tracks. Judah, the lead singer, brings the band flavor. Hard rock, indie, pop etc. It doesn't really matter because he delivers every time.

Stonethrown accomplishments since 2006, include sold out shows at World Cafe Live and The Trocadero, international sales from their debut record, "Where You Stand," live appearances and airplay on national FM radio stations 93.3 WMMR, 94.1 WYSP, and 104.5 WRFF, nominations for "Best Rock" by The Independent Singer/Songwriter Association and "Philly Artist of The Year," by The Deli Magazine and a slot at The Dewey Beach Music Festival 2009.

Growing up in the home of house music, I was pretty much predestined to accept, if not enjoy dance music from time to time.

Though I was never really a huge fan of "Chicago House" (a little too soft for my liking), I wouldn't mind the occasional Cajmere track.

The club scene had its streamlined, house, trance or techno, but in the neighborhoods and local parties, there was a whole 'nother kind of music.

My featured artist is an artist that I've listened to for the majority of my life, most of this time, not even knowing his name.

My Music Dealers Featured Artist of the day is Dj Slugo.

Credited for the creation of Juke music, his songs, his style, his rhythms and techniques are at the root of Juke music, and its newly forming cousin, Ghetto Tech.

Referred to as houses obscene younger cousin, Juke music uses high tempo drums, various tones and styles of percussion to create textures and depths with bass that translates to the dance floor and in many cases your trunk.

The vocals range anywhere from 1/8th note, one word vocal chops to full verses, usually sexually explicit, lewd tales about voluptuous women, clean shoes, and parties in general.

One of my personal childhood favorites, classic Chicago Juke "DJ Slugo - Wouldn't You like To Be A Hoe?" .

I've been anticipating this artists for a while because I love what the music is, gritty, raw, dance music and nothing more.

No pretty pads in the background, no fancy arpeggiators, no sparkling vocals swimming in effects.

Just 808/909 drum loops, minimal synth lines and vocal chants usually recorded right through a DJ mixer on a cheap dynamic mic- just the essential things needed to get the dance floor moving- no frills.

What’s up everyone, for this weeks Music Dealers featured artist I wanted to tell you everyone about a band that is a true pop culture icon, Motorhead. For those of you that are not familiar with Motorhead (shame on you first of all!), if you’re a fan of Metallica, Queens of the Stone Age, Anthrax, and a lot of punk music of the 80’s and 90’s then your are reaping some of the fruit that has fallen from the musical tree that is Motorhead. Formed in London, England in 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister. Motorhead have been called the “fathers of speed metal and Thrash metal” though Lemmy prefers to describe their music simply as Rock n’ Roll, whether they are the “fathers” of speed/thrash metal or not what can not be debated is the fact that they were a major influence to those genre(s).

What I like about Motorhead is that since their inception and till this very day of creating music (that’s 34 years, if my public school education serves me correctly) through a number of line-up changes (Lemmy is the only remaining member of the original line up of the band), countless tours and shows, and who knows how many hours in studio sessions, Motorhead has and remains to be….Motorhead. They have not changed to try to conform to anyone, in doing that Motorhead has an impeccable integrity to their music which is rarely seen in music now a days.

Their work and dedication has seen the band garner some very prestigious awards. 2005 saw the band receive their first Grammy for Best Metal Performance for their cover of Metallica’s Whiplash from Metallica’s “Metallic Attack: The Ultimate Tribute”. VH1 ranks Motorhead #26 on their list of 100 Greatest Artist of Hard Rock.

Motorhead's song "The Game" is used as the entrance theme music for WWE superstar Triple H who is a big Motorhead fan, here the band performs the song live at WWE's biggest event Wrestlemania.

I found a quote from an interview done with Lemmy that I thought pretty much summed up Motorhead’s approach to Rock n’ Roll and might be part of the reason why they have had so much success over the last three decades: “I’m playing Rock n’ Roll and I think Rock n’ Roll should be sacred – it is to me. I don’t see why it should not be for everybody else."

What's up world!? Monday is my Music Dealers featured artist of the week day. This week I didn't know what genre i wanted to do or what artist, but then I remembered a GREAT pop rock band from here in Chicago that signed up a week or two back. DOT DOT DOT. This band does an amazing job at blending pop rock with heavy synth dance tracks that definitely gets you noddin' your head and tappin' your foot.

After I heard this band I was instantly hooked on their music. I do a little research before I write anything about a featured artist and I realized they went far on FOX's show "Next Great American Band." Clearly I am not a big fan of reality TV shows. Below is a video of Dot Dot Dot on from that FOX show performing their original song "Stay".

Their song "Don't Move" is my favorite song by them. It showcases how they perfectly blend rock elements with synth filled dance beats. If you listen to this song and don't nod your head, tap your foot, or want to dance - then something is seriously wrong with you. haha.

United Dope Front

Hey everybody this week for my Music Dealers featured artist I wanted to tell you all about a band called United Dope Front. If catchy melodies and harmonies are to your liking then this is a band you should get familiar with. Integrating the traditional idioms of jazz and funk with the more recent developments in the hip-hop and electronic dance worlds, the Dope Front generates a sound all their own. What drew me to their music was the way that they weave guitars, sax, keyboards and drums with turntables that gives them a contemporary groove but still maintains an element of hip hop.

If any of you watched the MNF Football game on October 5th between Green Bay & Minnesota you probably saw an ad for Corona which used UDF's song "5 Days Left" which was placed by Music Dealers. That game was the most watched event in cable television history.

An Argument For Unfamiliar Music Versus ‘Hit’ Music In Brand Advertising.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much research available that proves what works better in advertising – a known hit, or an unknown song. There is, however, research based on music in retail environments, comparing the two.

A study conducted by Washington State University’s Business School, titled, “The Effects of Music in a Retail Setting on Real & Perceived Shopping Times” concluded that individuals who had a choice as to the duration of their shopping experience shopped longer when listening to less familiar music compared to more familiar music. And that individuals reported being more aroused while listening to unfamiliar music compared to familiar music.

The authors added, “These results are counter-intuitive to the expectation that listening to familiar music would encourage longer shopping.” To add a little more weight to the findings, the research cites other studies which more or less end up with, or at least point towards the same conclusion.

Paul Anthony, founder/CEO of Rumblefish, a music branding company based in Portland adds, “We have found that you can increase the length of stay for a customer at a retail store by 28 percent by playing less familiar music rather than more familiar music.”

Although it could be argued that you can’t make a direct correlation between the effects of unfamiliar music in retail environments and unfamiliar music, as opposed to ‘hit’ music used in brand advertising, it’s at least interesting.

What I find most interesting is that if the research is right, unfamiliar music tends to make people stick around longer. For advertising purposes, and given that the song has to have an engaging hook, the use of unfamiliar music may cause people to stick with a commercial longer, rather than zapping it.

Advertising has always relied on music, mostly original music that bragged and boasted about the brand, called the jingle. In fact, David Ogilvy once famously said, “If you can’t write it, sing it.”

Licensing popular songs for campaigns only began taking hold in the late 80’s and today has become common practice. A few years ago, an article in The New York Times, titled, “Forget Jingles. Viewers Prefer Familiar Tunes in Commercials” had this contrary observation, “One difference lately is that many songs being used are not mass-market hits. Indeed, many might not even ring a bell with the general public -- and that is one big reason they are used. Madison Avenue's newest idea is to discover innovative music that reaches a particular audience, usually young people.”

“The move to less widely known music reflects the rise of niche brands, niche media and niche marketing. An advertiser doesn't need an expensive mass hit when a more obscure, semi-pop song might be the track that reaches its niche youth market.”

As well, there are other reasons a brand marketer should consider using original, yet unfamiliar music as opposed to known, ‘hit’ music:

* The most obvious is cost. According to experts cited in the NY Times article, the fee to use a hit song in a commercial starts at about $150,000. To use the actual recording might cost another $150,000. The fees usually cover use for one year and are renegotiated for long-running campaigns. Tracks from unknown artists are considerably less than that. In fact, most are happy just getting the exposure, along with a nominal fee.
* Using new music can give a brand, especially a youth-oriented brand an added cachet as a patron of emerging music. In other words, the “cool” factor.
* A logical problem with using familiar ‘hit’ music from recognized stars is that the advertising often promotes the celebrity’s brand more so than the corporate brand paying the freight. A recent example of this is Blackberry’s pairing with U2, with the commercial's super informing us that "Blackberry loves U2." Something we all, apparently, need to know.

In conclusion, we recently experienced a lot of success in writing an original track for a Credit Canada TV commercial. Immediately after it went on air the client was bombarded with requests as to the details of the song.

Although I’ll post a more detailed case study later, the short version is that from the beginning of the campaign we planned on producing and promoting the full length track, titled ‘Two Scoops.’ In order to do this, we extended the campaign into social media, primarily using the track as the social object.

So far, the results are that ‘Two Scoops’ has been picked up and is being distributed by Universal Music and is now on medium to high rotation on radio across Canada (at the same time the TV commercial is running another flight). In the month of September, according to Trendr, the singer, Michelle Harding, was receiving 125,000 hits a day on her MySpace page. The music video, just launched at the end of August, has had well over 200,000 complete views online. It’s currently at number 20 on the California Music Channel. And apart from many good reviews, the song has been nominated for a Hollywood Music in Media Award.

Michelle and her band will be going on a 42-city tour starting in November, coinciding with her full length record being released in February.

Credit Canada has had a banner year and is delighted the song has helped bring the brand message to a much larger audience than traditional thinking and media would have allowed.

Regardless of money, I don’t think this would have happened with a hit song by Beyonce, or the Beatles for that matter.

This partnership creates further opportunities such as branded music videos, entertainment based promotions, virals and live performance. The client’s brand benefits by engaging with the audience through channels which typically have not been available. There are few things more potentially viral, engaging, or voluntarily repetitive than a good song.

Super Black Market

What up world? Beautiful Monday here at the Music Dealers Chicago Headquarters. This week I chose a rock band that Music Dealers actually met up with at the beach in California - Super Black Market. You can see Music Dealers Sunday Fun day at the Beach with Super Black Market - HERE. While doing some edits to that video I was instantly drawn into the song "Look At This City." This song stayed in my head for the whole day and I became an instant fan.

This band was born in Warrensburg, a Central Missouri town where everybody knew them: Sonny Remlinger –social butterfly motormouth with skinniest black jeans, a quick hand on your shoulder and a smile from here to L.A.; Joseph Remlinger – amiable, quieter, younger, taking everything in, taking late-night notes about parties, vampires and suicides for his brother to sing about; Benn Bluml – quieter still, his gaze gets stuck on the physics problems in his head.

Ode
As the leaves turn from green to yellow, red, purple. The whole feeling of walking down the street changes.

Maybe its something in the air, the seasons changing always seem to just make the air smell sweeter.

Maybe its the warm colors, only seen once a year bringing back memories.

Any reason, I chose my Music Dealers Featured Artist to be Ode.

Maybe its because they are influenced by the same sights and winds as I, but something makes them the absolute perfect band to listen to in this fall weather.

Hailing from Chicago, Ode is a band that adheres organic instrumentation to sincere vocals and beautiful song writing, whittling peices of music that are timeless- current, and vintage all at the same time.

My favorite song is Murderess, the words are sang almost painfully over the somber guitar track. With touches of strings, drum/percussion accents and a faint synth that haunts you until the end of the track, this song would be perfect in any tear jerking scenes of drama.

Contrasting this, is the song Fair Weather Plan, which has has a more upbeat, quirky feel to it, horn pieces, swingin' drums and violin.

Wes Restless

Greetings good people, hoping your having a great Tuesday! I wanted to spotlight an artist whom I think is a true talent. Wes Restless is a singer, songwriter, emcee from Chicago. What initially drew me to his music was how soulful his music is, the song “Warm Me Up” which was done via another collective he is a part of called The Jordan Years, instantly took me back to my childhood hearing my mom play her favorite songs from Motown on vinyl (remember vinyl?). After finding more music from him I discovered an immensely talented emcee whose lyrical prowess brought to mind a personal favorite artist, Phonte of the hip hop duo Little Brother.

The million dollar tale of "Happy Birthday to You"

The song "Happy Birthday to You" is an example of just how interesting the world of licensing is. Think about this song -- it is only 6 notes. Yet it is one of the best known songs in the world. It was written in 1893 by Mildred and Patty Hill and first published with the words, "Good morning to you".

The Copyright was registered in 1934 in a court case involving a musical called "As Thousands Cheer" by Irving Berlin. The Clayton F. Summy Company became the song's publisher in 1935. Through a series of purchases and acquisitions, the song now belongs to AOL Time Warner. ASCAP represents the song for public performance licensing.

The copyright to "Happy Birthday to You" should have expired in 1991, but the Copyright Act of 1976 extended it, and the Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 extended it again, so the song is protected until 2030 at least.

"Happy Birthday to You" brings in about $2 million per year in licensing fees according to Snopes.com. If you ever hear the song in a movie, TV show or commercial, a licensing fee has been paid. Any manufacturer making a toy that plays the song pays a licensing fee. The manufacturer of any musical card playing the song pays a licensing fee, and so on. This 6-note song is big business.

It's unusual for a new rock band to sell out their first performance, but then again, AUTOMATIC FIRE is not just another new rock band. Molded from some of the best bands to come out of the Philly rock scene, AUTOMATIC FIRE has all the makings of a supergroup: famous band mates, devoted fan base, and a commercial sound that still retains freshness and originality.

Bliss

Sultry vocals, innovative production, great song writing, all fall perfectly into place to create the music that is; Bliss.

My Music Dealers featured artist is a female vocalist from NY, NY, Bliss.

The production instantly snatches your attention with sound combinations and melodies that catch you off guard, but still leave you wondering where you'll be taken next.

Her faintly raspy, warm voice reminds me of Macy Grey (with a name plate chain, a hoodie, more attitude, and a 2 finger ring), and the off the wall production reminds me of a more organic M.I.A or Santigold.

With upbeat tracks like How Kool for the club, experimental tracks like Shooting Starz for your headphones and plain ol' dope songs like Fix, Bliss is bound to wind up on your iPod in one way of another.

Dressed in the flyest of hipster fashion Bliss coasts onto the scene as vibrant as a tropical song bird, both audibly and visually.

What’s up everyone, another Tuesday is upon us which means that it time for my Music Dealers Featured Artist of the week. For this week I wanted to spotlight at a band from the UK called Blue October (UK). What I like about Blue October (UK)’s sound is that they manage to create a great blend of electronic music to go along with some outstanding guitar playing to create a great melodic canvas that also has a subtle dance groove.

What up everyone? Another great week here at Music Dealers - Another Bears win - Another Great featured artist from the Music Dealers catalog. This week I chose to do an R&B artist from Florida - LeVar Thomas. All his songs really showcase his amazing songwriting ability. He writes songs that are catchy, but at the same time many people can relate to them. This is very powerful in music - songs people can relate to.
Below is a rough video from one of his songs "Can't Hide From Love". This song is a good example of his songwriting ability as well as his great voice.

LeVar's style kind of reminds me of Ne-Yo, but with his own twist on it. The production behind him is top notch and fits his style and message perfectly.

The film is about a small school on the west side of Chicago that for the last 30 consecutive years, has had a 100% graduation rate. Greetings good people, hope everyone is having a great Tuesday. This week’s featured artist comes from right here in Chicago (West Side stand up!); he’s a producer by the name of Grant Parks. I first came across Grant Parks’ music while on Myspace looking for artist, I always make it a point to look for talent here in Chicago.

Grant Parks has worked with many artist over the span of his career, artist such as Grand Puba & Sadat X (Brand Nubian), Rhymefest, Crucial Conflict, KRS-One, QUE B.I.L.L.A.H, Pugs Atomz and many more.

Honestly I could go on and tell you how great a producer Grant Parks is (which he is) but really what moved me to highlight him today was also his involvement with the Stop the Violence Movement. 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the original STV movement which spawned the single “Self Destruction” which featured an all star cast of emcees KRS-ONE, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, and Public Enemy too name a few. Today there is a new movement and with the “Blastmaster” KRS-ONE still at the helm Grant Parks produced the track “Self Destruction 2009” which features Twista, Crucial Conflict, Syleena Johnson and many others.

I think this songs message is one that needs to heard, especially in this day and age (goggle search Derrion Albert). Young people are losing the sense of appreciation for the value of life and a song like this speaks directly to them. As a person who enjoys music of substance and as a parent I commend Grant Parks and all the other artist on this song for attempting to help to address this problem.

Another wonderful Monday. Another Chicago Bears win. Another wonderful week here at Music Dealers. And best of all - another one of my Music Dealers featured artists. As I stated in my last featured artist post I am staying away from rappers for a week, or two, or three - we'll see.

This week I chose a pop artist from California - Kim DiVine. A lot of artists I come across these days seems like they are forcing themselves to sing for whatever reason. With Kim's music, it feels very natural. Her songs are very upbeat and catchy and they will get you tapping your foot. Her unique voice is captivating and will definitely stick with you. The production behind her fits her voice perfectly.

P2thela is a rapper from L.A. Ever since I first heard the track, "Im From Cali" I was hooked. He is very ambitious and he aims to be at the top of the music industry. While that is a lofty goal for any artist, I believe that he has the talent to do it. He is making a name for himself in California, and for good reason.

Play loves his city and his fans. He is not only a rapper he does his own production as well. Making beats for both,"Getting Money" and "Professional". One is a raw hip hop track and the other a softer R&B song. There is no doubt that he is versatile with both his lyrics and beats. Well, what sets him apart from others? His demeanor. He makes no excuses for himself, P2thela is a go getter and will stop at nothing until he has achieved all of his goals.

St Andrew

Now days, its hard to find fresh, original music.

You're either finding people who are reaching back, trying to make retro sounding songs.

Or people who just skim the surface and make what's expected, "safe" songs.

But every once in a while you come across an artist who's work transcends all that should be or has been.

My featured artist this week is St Andrew .

Thick synth basses, laid back drum grooves, heavy use of effects and abrasive, abstract sounds create banging futuristic songs so hot, you'll slap your momma (Disclaimer: Music Dealers does not condone the slapping of any mothers).

Working with famed UK electronic musician Adam Freeland, St Andrew has spent the last 6 months, helping create the Freeland Live set for Glastonbury 2009 And Beyond, all the while working on his own release.

Influenced by Justice, The Beatles, Daft Punk, J Dilla, Kanye West, Jackson 5, and Beastie Boys- you'll find tracks that touch all across the board.

Hard, soulful, driving, warm, and technically advanced music that manipulates rhythm and sonic boundaries.

What better way to build with your co-workers than to shoot 90mph paintballs at eachother? Two weeks ago Music Dealers, Bandit Productions, and MightyBytes all went on a paintball trip to Joliet, Illinois. The paintball facility had 28 different fields, but we only had time to play 7 games. We played form 10am to 5pm, and everyone was exhausted.

BLAH BLAH BLAH

Happy Tuesday everyone, this week’s Featured Artist has a sound that would make one believe that they were born and raised in the era of British Rock’s heyday. However you would be surprised to know that Blah Blah Blah is a diverse group of musicians creating their music from right here in Chicago.

The band is made up of Solomon (Guitar/Vocals), Dario (Drums), Byron (Bass), and Phillip (Guitar/Keyboards) what makes their sound so appealing is that while each band member is a very good at their respective instrument, there is no one that attempts to stand out. The result is a great blend of musicianship that acts as a canvas for Solomon’s voice to paint vivid pictures.

This band’s sound is a bit reminiscent of Radiohead (earlier material) and the The Smiths in my opinion, although Blah Blah Blah still manages to add a bit of pop appeal to their music. Be sure to catch them live and witness a great band on the rise.

Nobody Famous

What up everyone? What a great Monday...I hope everyone got to see the Bears beat the Steelers. Makes my whole week that much better. Anyways, this week I chose another rapper (my next couple weeks will be rap free, I promise...lol).

I was looking for rap / hip hop music on the web a few weeks back when I came across Nobody Famous. He is a rapper/producer based out of California, but from Atlanta, Georgia. A lot of times when an artist produces and raps one side is usually better than the other but Nobody Famous is on point in both categories. Nobody Famous was URB's Next 100. URB really knows how to choose good artists as this is the second one that I have featured.

His song "Electric" was just placed by Music Dealers in the Premiere of the new CW TV show "The Beautiful Life." This was also one of my favorite songs by him. This song will definitely get your head noddin. Check out his song on "The Beautiful Life Below".

"I Got You" is a song that really showcases his versatility. He is rapping over an acoustic guitar. This is just a really great vibe track. Be sure to check it out.

Below is his video for "Don't Act Like I Never Told You" of his CD, "Order Up! Vol. 3 Chicken and Waffles". This is a great song and I think did a great job of capturing the message in the video. I think the video adds a lot to the song as a whole.

I also found a Nobody Famous Beat video, which I thought was cool. It brings you in the lab with Nobody Famous during his beat making process. I always enjoyed these videos because it lets you know how they make beats as well as what equipment and software they use. If you are interested in the process or a producer yourself I strongly suggest you check it out.

Be sure to check out his track as you will not be disappointed. If you like what you hear be sure to pick up his new CD "Order Up! Vol. 3 Chicken and Waffles." It definitely worth picking up.

Dear music industry: go fuck yourself.

Music royalty groups ASCAP and BMI are harassing online music stores such as iTunes to pay performance fees not only for the songs that they sell, but for the short clips that they use as previews. You know, the things that entice people to pay for music. They want to be paid for advertisements for their product.

Just how backwards is this industry? How many years can they continue to just not get it in such an extreme way? You would have thought that maybe it would have taken a few years for them to figure out the internet, but we're way beyond that. This entire industry seems to be run by people who don't just not understand the internet, but are aggressive about not understanding the internet. They have their old way of doing business and the old way the world works, and they'll be damned if any new fangled thing like a complete upheaval in the way people acquire and listen to music is going to change that.

It'd almost be funny if the people who were really being harmed by these jackasses weren't the artists. Bands aren't the ones pushing for something that will only end with their best form of advertising being pulled from the iTunes Music Store (because make no mistake, that's what will happen before Apple pays for fucking song clips). It's these royalties idiots, the same people who almost killed off Pandora.

So here's the bottom line, guys: you're doing it wrong. And you've been doing it wrong for a while. You need to figure out a new way of doing business, and that doesn't mean just shifting fees around and charging where you clearly shouldn't be charging. Earn your paychecks, because unlike the bands you purport to be representing, you're still getting them. [CNET via Electronista]

Archie Powell & The Exports

You can't help but be in a good mood after listening to "Moving to the City". With their own version of classic americana style folk/rock, Archie Powell & The Exports will definitely make a splash. Well written songs stand the test of time, so with some creativity and overall good music they will hit the ground running.

I like this band for the simple fact that they are down to earth and they make great music. Although that always seems like a recipe for success, some get lost on there way, but Archie Powell & The Exports remain constant in this ever changing world of music.

Lullatone

Depending on the morning, I try to play some music that captures the mood of how I feel.

Sometimes I know its going to be a busy day, a day I would need energy, so I throw on my headphones and blast Justice until my ears ring.

If I'm doing some thinking I'm listening to Atmosphere, if I'm feeling artistic; MGMT or Imogen Heap, rowdy; Lil Jon, etc, etc...

But when the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and I wake up before my alarm, my day's soundtrack has to be something happy and lighthearted. Something that warms the soul with the feeling of sunlight on your skin.

Which is why for my Music Dealers artist of the week, I chose the group Lullatone.

They use minimal instruments, Lo-Fi sounds and percussion to create floating, child like melodies that make you want to chill with your niece, have cookies and read some Eric Carle (oh yeah, I said it). They refer to their style of music as "pajama-pop" and it's really no wonder why.

They have in the past done background music for Hello Kitty conventions, NHK's 20th Anniversary commercials (NHK is Japan’s main national television network), scored numerous video art pieces, and have been creating lullabies that loop seamlessly and allow continuous play thorough the night.

ADAD

Peace everybody hope everyone is having a great Tuesday. For my featured artist this week I wanted to focus on an artist whose music I have been a fan of for quite sometime. Adad is a gifted emcee from right here in Chicago (Southside to be exact) whose music grips the listener’s ear from the moment you push play. With a sound that is rooted in hip hop but also encompasses elements of jazz and funk, ADaD’s music is a refreshing wake up call from the redundant “drugs, money, and murder” that are drowning the “mainstream” airways nowadays. Dealing with social relevance in hip hop is becoming a dying art despite it being one of the pillars the culture was built on, thankfully ADaD is doing his part to keep the “roof from caving in” on it.

ADaD is also one half of the group Eulorhythmics (U-low-rhythmics) together he and partner Kenny Keys cook up some soulful melodic dishes that are sure to satisfy those with an appetite for great music.

Ethno Music Orchestra

Good morning everyone! This week I decided to switch it up a bit and do a whole different kind of artist, the Ethno Music Orchestra. Their sound is great. The arrangement is on point and the quality is top notch. This is the kind of music I can totally picture on some Discovery Channel type shows or even some movie placements.

Their song "Golden Times of Palmyras" showcases their great arrangement as well as their outstanding quality. This is the type of music that really allows you to paint a picture in your head while listening to it. "Let The Sitar Play" is another one of their songs that stands out to me. Having practiced yoga for years, she had the idea to combine music and yoga as a way to fully engage kids, giving them the mind/body benefits of yoga plus the joy of hearing many styles of music. She founded Fireflies Musical Yoga for Kids in 2006. When she began teaching kids' yoga, she brought along her guitar and a few tunes she had written. Instant hit: the kids loved it when Kira sang and played, and they always asked for more music. They learned the songs very quickly, sang along, and easily remembered the poses that went with them. Kira began writing more and more songs to use in class, which eventually inspired her to record "Dance for the Sun," released in early 2007. Thanks to positive word-of-mouth, some great reviews, a handful of awards, and (last but not least) an out-of-the-blue request from Dell Computer to use her song “Colors” in a worldwide ad campaign in 2008, Kira’s music has found a large, diverse and devoted following. Eighteen-year-olds on Facebook, parents of developmentally disabled kids, and at least one monk in Dublin…they, and many others, have been inspired and moved by her songs.

JazzKamikaze

From a country known for vikings, comes a band with music that does more than soothe the savage soul.

My featured artist of the week is quintet of extremely talented individuals: JazzKamikaze.

Starting out as complete strangers 3 years ago, a band like this forming is as spectacular as watching the planets align. Light vocals and some of the tightest band playing I've heard create a funky and smooth soundscape that keeps you moving without forcing you along.

My favorite song is Music Is My Heroin Bounce. The clean acoustic guitar and vocals in combination with Saxophone and a funky bass line will have your head bobbing and foot tapping harder than your usual jazz number.

With 2 critically acclaimed albums and an international following, its no wonder why JazzKamikaze is the top jazz band in Denmark and is not slowing their momentum anytime soon.

THE RADISHES

Hey everybody for this week's featured artist I went with The Radishes, a band from the sunny skies of San Francisco. Their sound has been called a mix of Nirvana and Motorhead, although I think their music also has a White Stripe-ish vibe to it. One quote about the bands sound was: "If Kurt Cobain lived to become a member of Motorhead, it might prove reminiscent of The Radishes"-East Bay Express (Oakland, CA)

What I personally like is the energy that their music brings to the listener. The song "Hook Me Up" is the song that got me hooked, this will definitely wake you up in the morning, check out the video:

These guys also know how to put on a live show, above is a pic taken from their performance at SXSW in 2008.

After a long weekend I'm back at it. Another week, another featured artist to fill your headphones with. I was not trying to feature any rappers just because these days it seems rap is going extinct with good artists, but after listening to JDP I had to let yall know about him. It looks like Chicago, once again, is about to produce another big rapper. What a good feeling. His style is refreshing, different, doesn't get old. I think 2009-2010 is going to be pretty big for JDP - be on the lookout.

His mixtape, Aid Raid is being sponsored by the LA clothing company IM KING. This mixtape is solid. Great production, a lot of features and is a good listen. JDP describes this mixtape as the "official" introduction to who JDP is as well as his music.

JDP's success began while still attending Columbia College Chicago. In 2006 JDP formed Flyy City Media Group with partner Jay Torres, and found success performing with major recording acts such as Rich Boy, Shawnna, Cap-1, GLC, Yung Joc & HotStylez, The Cool Kids and Gemini.

Below is the official video for his song "Styrofoam Cups." This song has gotten pretty good rotation on Chicago's biggest radio stations, WGCI, where JDP was also the featured artist of April 2009. Check out this song. It could definitely be a radio hit.

Eric and Mili were recently invited to a Western themed party at Bob Badami's house (Music Supervisor on such films as Public Enemies, Transformers, Hancock, Angels and Demons, etc). Of course we had to honor our hosts wishes and dress for the theme. Eric's shirt was a big hit of the party and sparked conversations between us and the producers of Public Enemies.

Well, it was one helluva party. Big thanks to Keys N Krates for making a Sunday afternoon show in L.A after rocking it on Saturday in San Francisco. He is battle MC from Stockton California. Okwerdz is well know for his freestyles but he has made a smooth transition into the song writing world. Bullet AKA Mr. Robotic

Chicago, stand up!

My featured artist comes from my hometown, and current residence, Chicago.

Using extremely catchy song writing and up beat production, Bullet will for sure be another artist to follow from the windy city.

One of my favorites is Mr. Robotic . He uses his swagger and song writing to produce a clean dance track that's impossible to stand still too. Reminiscent to Kanye or Timbaland- Slot-A's production is fresh and smooth and creates the perfect fusion when teamed up with Bullet A.K.A. Mr. Robotic .

Aside from his high quality work, another thing that caught my attention was his charity work. Mr. Robotic keeps the kids in mind and it shines through in his clean lyrics. If you like dancing and clean, clever raps be sure to check out Mr. Robotic.

Working Class Heroes

What up everybody? This week I chose a Pop Rock band out of Wales, UK. Working Class Heroes. I was searching for Pop Rock bands when I came across their MySpace. I never came across too many Pop Rock bands with a lead female vocalist. It was a different, refreshing sound, not to mention their songs sticking with you after you turn them off.

KEINGZ RANSOM

They are an R&B group with a lot of flare. They have a wide vocal range, with soulful lyrics. They remind me a bit of Boyz II Men. With a unique artistic process their songs range from club hits to smooth soul tracks.

The quartet is made up of Rodney Miller, Cedric Hughes, Kewaithian Freeman and Broderick Smith. They have been making waves for a couple years now and they are definitely putting a unique footprint in the R&B world.
